MOOVPAD Update – 21.09.13

Encouraging Vibes 😎

OK, I'll try and behave myself for the next 15 minutes or so. But I can only promise to try.

Trust me, that's hard enough 😛

Progress time.

Coding Progress & Concepts

First, the current UI and system code progress, and everything looks really good so far in terms of goals set and met. Today was another solid coding session with good progress on the new stage, so all these things are not of any concern at this stage, especially for the desktop UI.

Now... the new ideas. I know what I want to achieve by the end of the projects. There are areas I want to research more on and then decide which way to take the whole thing. I'll try and break these things up into two broad parts. The first is code flexibility when writing scripts in Unity.

Of course there are very complex games built using the engine, so scale of the code isn't an issue. But if you've written code for a productivity app of any kind, then you'll know that for desktop versions, there are System objects to handle specific tasks, while the mobile environment uses different objects. I need to learn more about the flexibility of the Unity monobehaviour class (that's what Unity called it... but I will corrupt it soon enough 😉 ).

Secondly, there's the issue of importing objects from packages like Blender into Unity, and the questions around property persistence and access once the objects are in Unity. To give you a simple example, let's consider the property of light emission like in the MOOVPAD logo above or the lightsaber image to the left. The property for this is relatively easy to set in Blender by manipulating shader nodes and materials. But do these properties then carry through to Unity and can they be accessed and manipulated via scripts? Still not sure.

Next Up

I get to play around with Blender a bit more tonight and hopefully make some good progress with the character's face and head. I'm more confident with the tooling in Blender but as you might expect, each different type of project uses a slightly different set of skills. So practice, practice, practice.

Stay awesome,

EMH
