Lessons & Next Steps Forward
As you guys know, I've been doing some initial tests to apply some of the things I've been learning about, and thought I'd share the initial results with you. I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish the second stage in time before the blog becomes inactive in around 10 days, but I wanted to at least provide some of the basics I've learned in case it's helpful to some.
Thankfully I've found some great learning resources that I know will continue to be important in the future, and the lessons have been valuable. For example, the screenshot above shows some of the initial test server hardening and setup results. One of the lessons learned during this first test has been to apply server encryption during the initial installation, rather than trying to find a solution to achieve the same thing later. The linux course I've been following basically skipped this little tidbit (perhaps it comes up later on).
For the next day or two, I'll be looking into OpenScap and OpenVAS, and how to best use these frameworks/tools. And why, you may ask, do I continue to torture myself thusly?
I want to lie and say I know the answer, so... 🙂
Stay awesome,
EMH
