Linux Ubuntu Learnings

Wonderland Chill 😎

While I've already started working, I wanted to take this opportunity to share some thoughts with you about my new Linux system, kind of a first-impression.

Please enjoy this nice mellow as I write this post for you guys. So... Ubuntu 20.4 is kinda cool.

Workflow Advantage

When you're in Linux and press the Windows key on your keyboard, it activates the Workspaces feature as you see on the left. A sidebar appears with different screens that you can customise based on your workflows. As you open a new app/browser/whatever, you can choose to move these and group them into different screens/workspaces. I'm not sure if Windows 11 has this feature, but at least in my Windows 10 setup, it's not included.

So in my particular case, I have a few different workspaces set up as you can see. This allows me to have things open in their own window and visualise how things are flowing between apps, which is important for someone working on a project with multiple elements. These images show a general web workspace for updating the site and general tasks, a separate one for GitHub so I can view my projects in large format, and my actual main task workspace where I currently have VS Code and Unity open.

Some Issues Though

The main ones I've found early on are driver support and strangeness when it comes to the settings for sound. Driver support should be pretty good generally but I use NVIDIA graphics, which also handles my sound, which required a proprietary driver. This was available but once loaded, it seems to interfere with the in-built Matisse file, causing it to not work properly or conflict with the NVIDIA one, which then causes that second driver to generate all sorts of weird interference and functional glitches when playing videos or songs.

For some reason, I also have to manually go into settings each time I switch on the system and change the sound setting to the NVIDIA driver. Seems that it defaults back to the Matisse driver each time, which is kind of annoying at times too.

Overall though, in terms of workflow in my particular case, I'm finding some benefits in some workflows from being on Ubuntu over Windows. And the driver and settings issue might be something I can resolve or just don't understand yet.
