Tech Upgrades #1 – Planning The Initial Phase

That Kinda Space 😎

Sometimes we need to let ourselves go through it, to learn from it and grow. Lots of explanations for it out there.

It just is. Kinda always is, and it just works.

Hope you enjoy this awesome Rising Wave mix 🙂

Main Workstation

This is planned as the main station where all of the future video prep, 3D work and other resource-intensive tasks will be handled. Longer term, this will get the AM5 system after all the relevant parts launch later this year/early next year, and have gone through the initial round of bug fixes (always inevitable). The short-term AM4 upgrades for this system will include:

  • Going to the 5950x, and using the 3900x in there now for the Test Server after the AM5 upgrade
  • Upgrading the cooler to one of the v2 RYUJIN 360 AIO
  • Keeping the Crosshair Formula Board for now, but then moving it later to the Programming & Productivity system
  • Adding more M.2 storage so as to separate the dual OS's on to separate physical drives with more storage for each
  • With the new generation of CPU's, and the kind of workloads this tower will handle, I'm considering moving up to a 128 GB memory kit for this system (currently on 64 GB and no issues, so will be useful for the Programming & Productivity station)

Eventually, this becomes the complete AM5 + next gen GPU (still undecided AMD vs NVIDIA for this system next time).

Programming & Productivity

This system will handle all of the web dev and general programming and testing, as well as doubling as the streaming system when the courses and other video stuff happens in the future (although there is still no urgent need or definite planned schedule for this... just getting things ready). So once the AM5 stuff happens for the Main Workstation above:

  • This will get the ASUS ROG Crosshair Formula + AMD 5950x combo
  • Although this system won't be doing anything really heavy in terms of graphics, I'm considering upgrading the current ASUS NVIDIA 3060Ti that's in my computer now to something a bit more powerful, then bringing that GPU into this system once the AM5 stuff happens
  • For the first round of hand-me-down upgrades, the cooling can stay AIO, but once that cooler starts to reach it's effective end, I'll probably try custom cooling in this system rather than experimenting with the main workstation for my first attempt
  • Keeping the Thor 850W for the next few months, then moving it across to this system in the hand-me-down chain... nothing wrong with that... works too 😉

Test Server

So this tower will end up with:

  • The 3900x, which is pretty good for a test server, and should remain viable as an in-house test server for at least the next 4-5 years
  • I'll need a new mobo for this system since the plan is to keep it small form factor, so a Mini-ATX or Mini-ITX case and suitable mobo
  • Since this tower will be handling much lighter workloads and running only part-time I could probably keep things simple and get away with the stock cooler that came with the 3900x (assuming it fits), or some other air cooler because water cooling in this system is likely to be more hassle than it's worth for me
  • The 3060Ti will also be plenty of GPU for this tower, so no need to upgrade this during the system's foreseeable future
  • Since it's only a test server for local networking, I can get away with less storage overall, and could probably just take the current 2.5" SSD in my computer (which I think is a 2TB from memory)
  • Given the use case for this system, I'm pretty sure that 32 GB RAM will be plenty, so that's the plan right now

It's important to keep in mind that all of the above will be happening over at least a 6-12 month timeframe, and not immediate upgrades. That's because the current system is working fine for what I need right now, and the video stuff will be happening later (plus all the parts being launched later this year or early next year). But good to have a plan for this kind of time period ahead, given what's happening in the tech space and planned for MOOVPAD 🙂

Stay awesome,
